Intro to.... Editing!
Now after shooting what we had needed, came a very vital part: the editing process. The way our group settled it, there were 3 important parts: the first 3 scenes, the last 3 scenes, and the music meant to play across it all. The first 3 scenes are important but not grouped with the last 3 as these 3 scenes display the awkwardness we went for being portrayed (for the record the scenes i am referring to are those of the storyboard). The last 3 scenes similarly yet in an opposite sense at the same time are important individual aspect because they portray the happiness and uniting portion of our advertisement. Finally, the music chosen throughout the advertisement is essential because as this advertisement has no dialect, the soundtrack selected will be what is used to demonstrate tone and shifts in moods audibly. To distribute the work we had decided Yaz will be in charge of the soundtrack, Lux will be assigned with the first 3 scenes, and I shall be tasked with the final 3 scenes. Often times Yaz prefers to be more independent and so through the soundtrack, she more or less had complete control of all aspects. Lux and I however, our roles required more communication and since we have such a good dynamic we're able to effectively communicate our scenes. Consequently, our portions will be able to flow more smoothly into one another, and feel tied to and connected, yet distinct at the same time. By now establishing the roles and distributions given, along with their justifications and reasonings for both, onto my idea's for my assigned portion. For the final 3 scenes, what I feel is most essential is the shift in tone. The viewer should be able to recognize that we've gone from an awkward period to a connected and unifying moment. In order to obtain that reaction, the shift of soundtrack must follow. Ideally the sound track is to be the same chosen song throughout the entire advertisement, however it must shift tones within the song itself. This song shift should occur in the transitions of scene 3 (Lux's final scene) into scene 4 (my initial scene). Aside from the soundtrack however, the duration of the footage must also be adjusted to properly fit the desired emotion the viewer should feel. The scenes must be long enough to not feel rushed as to not be too much for the viewer to take in, while also short enough to create an awkward atmosphere of waiting for something to occur. There needs to be enough time to understand and process what is occurring, and using context clues to understand the change of the energy. So by controlling these 2 aspects, of soundtrack and clip duration, the 2nd portion of the advertisement would then effectively demonstrate the unification brought by our Gum, the product we are advertising. This is the vision I have in mind when considering how I want this to be portrayed, so with this I hope the viewers of this blog feel more connect with the direction where this Highschooler want's to take his advertisement in its final production steps and how he plans to achieve that vision.
I'll see you all in the next one:)
